DIY Cafe Curtains

This is a project I did earlier in the year. Now that I have a blog I thought I would share it. I saw on Pinterest where people were using cloth napkins to make curtains; but I couldn't find any that I liked, or I didn't look very hard, so I decided to make my own.

I have never done a tutorial before and I only have my cell phone to take pictures so I will do my best explaining the project. It is pretty simple to complete but if you have questions please ask. I know how to sew a sort of straight line but that is about as far as my sewing skills go. I would say this project took me about thirty minutes...I am by no means a perfectionist and I don't have the patience to measure and cut perfectly. If I were sewing curtains for a living I might spend more time on it. Do you think I could make more money sewing curtains than teaching?

Gather your materials.

I found this fabric at Hobby Lobby and the curtain rod and clips at Target.

Lay your fabric out and cut to the size you think you need (or the size that you measured). I just eyeballed the size I needed. Cut a little bit bigger depending on the hem size you want. Fold over on all the edges and pin. Once again I just eyeballed it...was it perfectly square...no; but you can't tell when they are hanging up.

* You will need to cut two pieces of fabric the same size.

Start sewing! I used the edge of the foot to determine my hem size. I wanted a small hem.  Sew around the whole square or rectangle. I also back stitched at the start and end of the curtain.

Here is one of the finished panels.

Last: clip on the clips and place on the tension rod! Whala! Curtains! I live in an old farmhouse and this window looks out into an addition (the mudroom/laundry room). Maybe I should have made longer ones to hide the laundry; I just thought the cafe ones were super cute though! I am going to make more for the windows above the sink. I also used some leftover fabric to cover up a cork board on our mail/key center.

Remember: this was my first tutorial. If you have any questions or need further explanation please ask!

wow, I didn't know you could do this. I'm impressed. I like the curtains. No wonder it looks just like your kitchen!

Thanks Verna!
Mom, you didn't know I could sew or that I could start a blog?
